“Another day in paradise
Another day in which to excel
Another day in which we don’t give up, we don’t give in, we don’t give over
Sunrisers don’t accept limitations.”
— original Sunrisers chant said before each swim
Bob Roper, who famously holds the fastest Golden Gate swim record (17 minutes 21 seconds), created the Sunriser swim concept. He got the club to purchase our beloved motor-powered inflatable boats and piloted for almost every sunriser for the the first several years. As Bobby says, “anything worth doing is worth overdoing” (among other Roperisms like “shut up and swim!” and “it’s going to be GREAT!”). Bobby also created many of our nutcracker swims such as Point Bonita to Club, Bay2Breakers (Bay Bridge to Ocean Beach), Candlestick Park to Club, and Round-trip Angel Island, the definite marathon swim in the Bay.
Some popular sunriser swims are:
- Pier 7
- Exploratorium
- Pier 39
- Alcatraz
- Coghlan Beach
- Yacht Harbor
- Anita Rock
- Crissy Field
